How a SAP Test Works - SAP2005

 

SAP is the Government’s Standard Assessment Procedure for energy assessments of dwellings. The current version is SAP 2005, has been adopted by Governments as part of the England and Wales national methodology for calculation of the energy performance of buildings. It is used to demonstrate compliance for dwellings with Part L of the Building Regulations 2000 (in England and Wales).

 

Since 6th April 2006, SAP ratings are now required for every new dwelling of building conversion in the UK.

 

New Dwellings Approved Document L1A 2006

 

  • All new dwellings at the planning stage will have to demonstrate that an acceptable carbon dioxide emission rate will be achieved.
  • A Target Carbon Dioxide Emission Rate (TER) has to be calculated within the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP). This will be based on a notional dwelling built to the 2002 standards with Target reduction of 20%.
  • The actual Dwelling Carbon Dioxide emission Rate (DER) must then be no more than the TER. The new SAP 2005 incorporates all these calculations.
  • There are limits on heat loss through the fabric of the dwelling, also there can be on excessive solar gain and heat gains/losses from pipes, ducts and vessels used for space heating, cooling and hot water.
  • There is a requirement to provide energy efficient and properly commissioned heating and hot water services.
